Budapest Design Week 2011

Does the design culture of different countries have unique characteristics?

Budapest Design Week 2011: COULEUR LOCALE: THE COLOURS OF EUROPE IN OBJECTS, poses this question of difference to 30 European nations.
Having created Dublin’s shortlisted bid for World Design Capital Emma Curley and Bob Gray of Red&Grey Design were asked by Budapest Design Week 2011 to curate Ireland’s contribution to this headline exhibition.

We understand design starts with the user’s perspective, visualises clear goals, solves complex problems and prototypes solutions in context. Innovative design will never simply be about developing an aesthetic or making a statement, it is a process you use to create value and change.

We have explored every aspect of Irish design culture and infrastructure to emerging design industries, educational trends and public investment in design and utilised this bank of knowledge when forming a response.

We curated the objects and their Irish designers under three themes, ‘RE.TREAT’, 2009, by Úna Burke (theme : observation), Hurley Table,  2007,  by Gordan Byrne (theme : storytelling) , Infinite Objects by Mcor Technologies, 3D Printer (theme : ideas visualised).

Budapest Design Week sees 60,000+ visitors, and this international event has been created to showcase Europe’s innovative designers.
